Aktuella frågor Strindberg och folkrätten — ett tillägg
Med stort intresse och nöje har jag läst professor Ove Brings artikel om ”Strindberg och folkrätten” i SvJT 6/99 s. 656–670. I anslutning därtill (särskilt s. 659) kan följande händelseförlopp måhända vara av visst intresse. Jag skrev en gång en bokrecension i Zeitschrift für ausländisches öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht, 1985, s. 836– 841. Där skrev jag i not 2 att advokaten Gillis Wetter ”was fortunate in finding how the news of the Alabama award (14 september 1872) inspired the Swedish author August Strindberg, who wrote: The Alabama question has been settled not to the advantage of America but of justice, not to the injury of England, but for the good of future generations”. När jag sedermera — i september 1988 — som ordförande stod i begrepp att avkunna domen i Taba-målet (mellan Egypten och Israel) så föredrog jag inför mina fyra kolleger, bl. a. den egyptiske skiljedomaren Hamed Sultan, Strindbergs reaktion efter det att Alabama-domen hade offentliggjorts. Detta kom tydligen genast till den dåvarande egyptiske utrikesministern Boutros Boutros-Ghalis kännedom och enligt Jerusalem Post av den 30 september 1988 hade Boutros-Ghali ”told reporters the award would improve Egypt´s relations with Israel. [He] would like [also] to confirm our objective view in this case, which is that it is not a victory for one side and a loss for the other as much as a consolidation of the peace process” (se min artikel ”The Taba Tribunal, 1986–89”, i Juridiska Fakulteten i Uppsala, årsbok 1992, s. 27.
